The number of cases has fallen for several weeks in a row, although the number receiving hospital treatment remains relatively high at 636 patients. Of these, 133 have needed critical care.
While it is unclear exactly what factors are behind the sharp decline in cases, the swine flu vaccination may have played a role: since late October the jab has been given to 2.3 million people at greatest risk, including 81,000 pregnant women. Frontline health workers have been given a further 300,000 doses to prevent them spreading the virus between patients and to keep them working and well.

The past week has also seen 13 UK deaths, taking the total to 283: 191 in England, 54 in Scotland, 25 in Wales, and 13 in Northern Ireland.
