Qatar's emir Tamim and Egypt’s President Sisi
Qatar’s emir will invite President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to attend the final match of the men's handball world championship in Doha, the head of the international handball federation said on Tuesday.
According to several media reports published Tuesday afternoon, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani told federation head Hassan Mostafa, who is Egyptian, that he had issued an invitation to El-Sisi to attend the championship final when they met earlier this week.
Mostafa added that he had spoken with the ruler of Qatar about Egyptian-Qatari relations and that the emir had told him that there were no disputes with Egypt.
The head of the federation also revealed that Qatar’s prime minister invited Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab to attend the opening ceremony last week, although he did not attend.
The Egyptian national team is participating in the championship.
Earlier this week sources from both Egypt and Qatar stated that Sheikh Tamim plans to attend the Egyptian economic summit due to take place in Sharm El-Sheikh in mid-March.
Relations between Egypt and Qatar deteriorated after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, who had been backed by Doha.
Saudi Arabia played a mediation role, leading to reconciliation between Egypt and Qatar in December whereby both countries agreed to put a halt to negative media campaigns.
